Kevin Lausten, CEO of Morpheus Space, highlighted the escalating importance of propulsion in an interview with SpaceNews, underscoring its role in extending mission life and enabling complex orbital maneuvers.
Small satellites are no longer passive instruments simply orbiting. They require the ability to adjust their paths, avoid collisions, and maintain specific constellations for extended periods. This active management is crucial for everything from Earth observation to global communication networks.

The advancements in electric propulsion, such as Field Emission Electric Propulsion (FEEP) technology, offer the high efficiency and low thrust necessary for these demanding applications. These systems allow shoebox-sized satellites to perform intricate dance-like movements in orbit, optimizing their utility.
For the nascent off-world communities, this evolution in propulsion technology carries significant weight. It means that the vital infrastructure — communication relays, navigation beacons, and resource prospecting arrays — can be deployed more flexibly and affordably. Smaller, more capable satellites reduce the cost per bit and the latency of critical data links, making life and work beyond Earth more connected and resilient. The texture of off-world communication will become seamless, less constrained by orbital mechanics, fostering a more integrated extraterrestrial existence.
