DiskSats: A New Form Factor for Orbital Resilience

Orbital debris represents a growing concern, impacting the viability of long-term space operations and the safety of active satellites.

The Aerospace Corporation recently provided an update on its DiskSat demonstration, a novel approach to satellite design. These unique, pancake-shaped satellites were launched into low-Earth orbit in December 2025 aboard a Rocket Lab Electron vehicle.

Unlike conventional CubeSats or larger platforms, DiskSats are engineered with a low-profile form factor. This distinct shape offers potential advantages in atmospheric drag and controlled deorbiting, directly addressing the critical issue of orbital junk.

The ongoing demonstration aims to validate their performance characteristics, including stability and communication capabilities. Their compact nature also suggests a future where numerous small, specialized payloads can be deployed with greater efficiency and reduced risk.
